Brahmanbaria, June 3, 2025 – There has been a bumper harvest of litchi in Bijoynagar, Brahmanbaria this time. Juicy litchis are hanging in bunches in various gardens of the upazila, which has brought smiles to the faces of the locals. Not only that, but in addition to the good harvest, buyers from different parts of the country have been buying litchis directly from the gardens since the beginning of the harvest. This reduces the violence of middlemen and farmers are also getting fair prices.
Some villages famous for litchi in Bijoynagar upazila are Singerbil, Kalachhara, Harashpur, Ichhapura and Pattan. Litchi trees can be seen in almost every house in these villages, and many large litchi gardens have been established on a commercial basis. Since the soil here is excellent for litchi cultivation, there is hope for a good harvest every year.
Reasons for the good harvest:
It was learned from talking to agricultural officials and litchi farmers that the weather this year was quite favorable for litchi cultivation. Timely rainfall, sufficient sunlight and the necessary cold weather of winter have helped litchi buds and fruits to grow. In addition, improved fertilizer management, awareness of litchi farmers about disease and pest control have also contributed to the good yield.
Buyers' tendency to buy litchi directly from the orchard:
A special feature this year is that buyers are coming to buy litchi directly from the orchard. Wholesalers and general buyers from different parts of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet are visiting the orchards and buying litchi of their choice. This makes it easier to check the quality of litchi and buyers are getting fresh litchi. On the other hand, farmers can also avoid the commission of middlemen and get a fair price as they can sell directly to buyers.
Abdur Rahman, a litchi farmer from Kalachhara village, said, "This time the litchi yield has been very good. I hope to make more profit than last time. People are buying and taking it from the orchards, so it is also convenient to sell."
Another litchi farmer, Mofiz Mia, said, "This time, some traders from Dhaka have been taking litchis from Aisa Bagan since the beginning. This means we no longer have to wait in the market. We are also getting good prices."
Types of litchis and market prices:
In Vijaynagar, mainly China-3, Bombay, Madraji and Pati litchis are cultivated. Among them, China-3 litchis are in the highest demand because they are large, juicy and sweet.
China-3: Every 100 litchis are being sold for 400-600 taka.
Bombay and Madraji: Every 100 litchis are being sold for 300-400 taka.
Pati litchis: Every 100 litchis are being sold for 200-300 taka.
According to the Agriculture Department, litchis have been cultivated on about 1,000 hectares of land in Vijaynagar this year and there is a possibility of producing about 10,000 tons of litchis, the market value of which could exceed about 500 million taka. This bumper harvest of litchi is expected to have a positive impact on the economy of Vijayanagar.
