Mexico City, June 2, 2025 – Mexican club Cruz Azul won the CONCACAF Champions Cup by a huge margin of 5-0 in the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup held at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico. The match, which started at 7 am (Bangladesh time) today, Monday, secured Cruz Azul’s record seventh title.
Cruz Azul was in great shape from the start of the match. Cruz Azul captain Ignacio Rivero gave the team the lead with a brilliant goal in the 8th minute of the match. The ball fell to Rivero after a mistake by Ocampo and Cubas in front of Vancouver’s defensive line, and he came from the right wing to the middle of the field and put the ball past goalkeeper Takayoka with a powerful shot into the net.
Despite Vancouver Whitecaps' attempts to get back into the game after this goal, Cruz Azul's attacking edge did not diminish. Cruz Azul cornered the Whitecaps with back-to-back goals in the latter part of the first half and early in the second half. Mateusz Bogasz scored the team's second goal before the break, and Ángel Sepúlveda added a header in the second half. In the end, Cruz Azul lifted the Champions Cup trophy with a convincing 5–0 victory.
With the victory, Cruz Azul won their record seventh CONCACAF Champions Cup title, tying them with Club America. On the other hand, it was a disappointing defeat for Vancouver Whitecaps, who had performed well throughout the tournament and had defeated Inter Miami 5–1 on aggregate en route to the final. Their dream of becoming the first Canadian club to win the trophy remained elusive.
Before the match, the Estadio Olímpico Universitario was lit up with fireworks and the Champions Cup trophy on display. Former players such as Toussaint Ricketts came onto the field with the trophy. However, Vancouver could not maintain their recent unstoppable form on the field. Cruz Azul took full control of the match with their powerful attack and perfect finishing.
The match was a crucial clash between Liga MX and MLS clubs, with Cruz Azul taking advantage of their home field advantage and strong form to pull off a convincing win.
