Ishraq supporters chant slogans at Nagar Bhavan: 'My only demand is that there is no office except for the mayor'

Dhaka, 2 June 2025 – An unprecedented scene unfolded at the Nagar Bhaban of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) this afternoon. Supporters of BNP-nominated former mayoral candidate and member of the party's international affairs committee Ishraq Hossain suddenly gathered there and started shouting slogans loudly. Their slogan was one and the same—"My demand is only one, there is no office without a mayor". This slogan created a different atmosphere at the Nagar Bhaban, which is usually busy with government work.

Eyewitnesses said that when Ishraq Hossain himself entered the Nagar Bhaban in the afternoon, a large number of supporters also entered with him. It is said that he had originally gone to the Nagar Bhaban for an administrative work. But his presence created a kind of excitement among the supporters, and they started shouting slogans in his support.

The main theme of the slogan was to see Ishraq Hossain again as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation and to question the effectiveness of Nagar Bhaban in his absence. The supporters kept saying that Ishraq Hossain is their only mayor and without him, Nagar Bhaban is not really effective. Such slogans, which are usually heard in election rally grounds, were quite unusual to hear in an administrative office like Nagar Bhaban.

A tense atmosphere was created inside and outside Nagar Bhaban for quite some time around this incident. Security personnel tried to bring the situation under control, but Ishraq Hossain's supporters continued their slogans peacefully. After chanting the slogans, Ishraq Hossain completed his scheduled administrative work for some time and then left Nagar Bhaban with his supporters.

Political analysts believe that this incident is a manifestation of the strong loyalty of his supporters to BNP leader Ishraq Hossain and his political position. Such incidents are sending a message to local politics ahead of the upcoming elections. This, on the one hand, indicates the public support for Ishraq Hossain, and on the other hand, indicates that he is still quite popular among his supporters.

There was no immediate reaction from the DSCC authorities or the police administration after this incident. However, many are seeing such political sloganeering at the city hall as an unexpected and a challenge to the administrative environment.
