Dhaka, June 3, 2025 – Matthew Miller, who served as the spokesman for the State Department of former US President Joe Biden, made explosive remarks and said that Israel has 'undoubtedly committed war crimes' in Gaza, Palestine. His remarks came at a time when there has been widespread criticism and demands for an investigation in the international community regarding the military operation of the Israeli forces in Gaza. However, he also said that in his opinion, there has been no 'genocide' in Gaza.
Matthew Miller made these remarks in an interview given on the 'Trump 100' podcast of the British media Sky News on Monday (June 2). He served as the spokesman for the State Department of the Biden administration until January 2024. During this period, he often faced questions from journalists about Israel's military actions in Gaza and highlighted the US government's position, which denied accusations of war crimes against Israel.
"I don't think it (what happened in Gaza) is genocide," Miller said in the interview. "But Israel has undoubtedly committed war crimes—I have no doubt about that."
He went on to explain that there are two different views on war crimes. One is when a state deliberately follows a policy of war crimes or when it engages in reckless behavior that directly aids or abets war crimes. On this issue, he said, "Whether the Israeli state has committed war crimes is still an open question to me."
However, he stressed, "What is almost certainly not an open question to me is that there have been isolated incidents that are war crimes. Where members of the Israeli military have committed war crimes."
Miller criticized Israel's accountability system, saying, "We have not yet seen a sufficient number of their military members held accountable." He questioned whether Israel would do it at all, which is also an 'open question'.
His statement is seen as a significant change from the previous position of the Biden administration. Because when he was in charge of the spokesman, the US government did not come to any conclusion about war crimes against Israel. Miller himself admitted that when he was in government, he could not express personal opinions, but only highlighted the decisions of the US government.
Miller also noted that there was a disagreement within the Biden administration from the beginning about how to conduct policy on Gaza and Ukraine.
It is worth noting that both the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) are investigating Israel's military operation in Gaza and have been accused of genocide and war crimes. In such a situation, Matthew Miller's comments are expected to create a new discussion in the international community.
