More troops now in Los Angeles than in Iraq and Syria: Trump's new strategy
An unprecedented event is happening in the history of the United States. More US troops are currently deployed in Los Angeles than in war-torn countries like Iraq and Syria. The deployment of such a large number of troops on the orders of President Donald Trump has further heated up the domestic political situation in the United States.
Recently, violent protests broke out in Los Angeles over an anti-illegal immigration operation. To suppress the protests, President Trump ordered the deployment of hundreds of US Marines along with the National Guard. According to various sources, at least 700 Marines have been deployed in Los Angeles along with about 4,000 National Guardsmen, which will further militarize the situation in the city.
In comparison, about 900 US troops are currently engaged in counter-terrorism operations against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The US Department of Defense does not disclose the exact number of troops deployed in Iraq, but according to 2021 data, there were about 2,500 troops there. These figures clearly show that more troops have been deployed to deal with the domestic situation in Los Angeles than in Iraq or Syria, which indicates a major shift in US policy.
California Governor Gavin Newsom strongly condemned Trump's decision. He described it as "unnecessary, illegal and politically motivated." According to Newsom, the military deployment has actually added fuel to the fire, which is further exacerbating an already explosive situation.
The Trump administration claims that the operation is being carried out to arrest illegal immigrants and "liberate" Los Angeles from the violence of protesters. But critics say it violates human rights and violates US democratic values. The situation in Los Angeles has raised new questions about US domestic policy and strategies for suppressing mass protests.
