Two buses collide head-on on Tongi flyover: 25 injured, long traffic jam on highway |
Dhaka, June 5, 2025 – At least 25 people were injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses on the BRT flyover (flyover) of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi, Gazipur. The accident occurred in the Cheragali area of Tongi at around 1 pm today, Thursday (June 5). The entire flyover was immediately closed after the accident, causing a traffic jam several kilometers long.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the head-on collision occurred between a bus heading to Mymensingh from Dhaka and another bus coming from the opposite direction. Both buses were twisted and twisted due to the intensity of the collision. Immediately after the incident, locals and fire service personnel rescued the injured and sent them to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. The names and identities of the injured were not immediately known.
Cause of the collision and traffic jam:
It is believed that the cause of the accident was high speed and reckless driving by the driver of one of the buses. Since the flyover is a two-lane road, the risk of head-on collisions is already high. Immediately after the accident, traffic on the flyover on this busy highway was completely stopped. This caused long traffic jams on both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, which caused extreme suffering to passengers. Such accidents, especially before the Eid pilgrimage, have made the situation more complicated.
Tongi West Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iskandar Habibur Rahman told the media, "At least 25 people were injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses. The condition of two of the injured is critical. We are investigating the cause of the accident and efforts are being made to normalize traffic."
Fire service and police members quickly reached the scene and conducted a rescue operation and tried to normalize traffic by removing debris from the road. However, the rescue work was hampered due to the massive traffic jam.
This accident once again highlights the fragile picture of road safety in the country. Unfit vehicles, reckless drivers, and lack of discipline on the roads often lead to accidents that put the lives and livelihoods of countless people at risk.
