Unique initiative on Environment Day: Private mound in Sunamganj declared a bird and wildlife sanctuary! |
Sunamganj, 5 June 2025 – An extraordinary initiative has been taken in Sunamganj on the occasion of World Environment Day. Former Upazila Primary Education Officer Md. Abdul Hai, a resident of Ibrahimpur village in Sadar Upazila, has declared his personal mound of about two and a half acres as a bird and wildlife sanctuary. This exceptional initiative has added a new dimension to increasing local environmental awareness.
The sanctuary was officially announced at a program organized on the occasion of World Environment Day today, Wednesday (5 June). Sunamganj environmental activists, local dignitaries, education officers and Abdul Hai's family and relatives were present at the program.
Why this initiative?
Md. Abdul Hai has long had a love for nature and wildlife. He has noticed that the habitats of local birds and wildlife are rapidly disappearing due to urbanization and deforestation. His main objective was to create a safe haven, especially for various species of birds, whose free roaming space is decreasing.
Md. Abdul Hai said, "I want this hillock of mine to become a part of nature, not just my personal property. Birds should nest here peacefully, wild animals should roam freely. I am really happy to make this announcement on World Environment Day."
Features of the sanctuary:
Abdul Hai's two and a half acre hillock has various species of plants, which create a suitable environment for local birds and small wild animals. There is a natural fence around the hillock and no human interference or hunting will be allowed here. He will regularly maintain this sanctuary and work to maintain its natural environment.
Local impact and appreciation:
This initiative has been widely appreciated by local environmentalists. They feel that it will set a shining example in environmental conservation at the personal level and will encourage others to do the same. Such initiatives will play an important role in environmental conservation in haor-covered areas like Sunamganj, where biodiversity is rapidly disappearing.
Sunamganj District Environment Department Assistant Director Md. Enamul Islam welcomed the initiative. He said, "Creating such a sanctuary through private initiative is truly commendable. It will inspire us to protect our environment and biodiversity."
Such private initiatives on World Environment Day show a ray of hope. It proves that even small efforts can make a big contribution to environmental protection.
