Dhaka, June 2, 2025 – A court has sentenced a police constable to life imprisonment for kidnapping and extorting ransom in the name of DB police. This is an unprecedented incident where law enforcers got the maximum punishment for being involved in criminal activities. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Judge Md. Assams Jaglul Hossain announced the verdict today (June 2).
According to the details of the case, the name of the accused constable is Ariful Islam Joy. He was working in the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). He had two other accomplices in the kidnapping and embezzlement incident—Md. Al Amin and Md. Yusuf. The court also sentenced these two accomplices to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 50,000 each, and another one month of simple imprisonment in default. The accused were in jail and were produced in the court docket at the time of the verdict.
The incident took place on March 20, 2021. On that day, businessman Yusuf Ali was kidnapped in the Shahbagh police station area of the capital. The kidnappers then demanded a large ransom from Yusuf Ali's family. Although the victim Yusuf Ali was released after paying the demanded money, he immediately reported the matter to the police.
The police then started investigating the incident and quickly identified those involved in the kidnapping and embezzlement with the help of technology. The investigation revealed that a police constable was directly involved in this heinous crime. A kidnapping and extortion case was filed at Shahbagh police station in this incident. The investigation of the case was given to the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB).
After the investigation, the DB police submitted a charge sheet against the three accused to the court. Then the court framed charges against the accused and started the trial process. After a long hearing, taking testimony and arguments, the court announced the verdict today.
The court noted in its ruling that engaging in such a crime as a member of a law enforcement agency is a serious criminal offense, which is a grave blow to the peace and order of society and the trust of the people. This ruling is expected to send an exemplary message to members of the law enforcement agency involved in criminal activities. It will also be helpful in curbing unethical activities within the police.
