A much-awaited meeting is going to be held in London between Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, and Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP. The meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow, Friday (June 13, 2025) between 9 am and 11 am London time. However, the National Citizens Party (NCP) believes that the main agenda of this meeting should not be the election date, but rather reforms and justice should be given more importance.

The news of this meeting in London has created a lot of discussion in the political circles of Bangladesh. According to various sources, it will be a 'one-to-one' meeting at the Dorchester Hotel in London and the meeting has been organized from Dr. Yunus' office. The visit of BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury to London before the meeting has also fueled this speculation.

The NCP, however, has been adamant on their position from the beginning. They believe that it is essential to ensure a fair trial and fundamental reforms before holding a credible election in the country. Jatiya Nagorik Party leaders have repeatedly said that simply announcing an election date will not be of any use if the July massacre trial and other important reforms are not visible. They believe that holding elections without visible progress on these reforms will create chaos and increase public distrust.

NCP convener Nahid Islam has said several times before that a comprehensive roadmap of all three - trial, reform and election - should be released. This will create a space of comfort and trust in the public mind and among political parties. According to them, the reforms can be implemented much earlier, and only then should discussions on the election date begin.

Analysts believe that this meeting can open new horizons for Bangladesh's political future and the election process. However, when parties like NCP are prioritizing reforms and trial, what message comes out of this meeting and how much impact it has on the country's politics remains to be seen.
