Dhaka, June 24, 2025 — “Why Such Tears for Another Woman’s Husband?” Taslima Nasrin’s Question Sparks Debate

Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s emotional breakdown during a recent awards ceremony has sparked a wave of online discussion after exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasrin publicly questioned the moment. Karisma became teary-eyed while praising her former lover Ajay Devgn—who was present at the event with his wife Kajol—leading Taslima to raise concerns from a feminist perspective.

In a social media post, Taslima wrote, “Everyone is mesmerized by Karisma’s flowing tears. Her sacrifice is being glorified.” She then pointedly asked, “Why such intense weeping over another woman’s husband? Is it possible to cry like that for someone else’s spouse?”

According to Taslima, Karisma is being portrayed as the ultimate 'feminine' figure or as a self-sacrificing woman—an image that reinforces traditional patriarchal ideals. She argued that such public displays of emotion, particularly when directed toward a man who is no longer part of one's life, serve to uphold outdated societal expectations of women.

Taslima further noted that many people tend to respect and praise such emotional vulnerability in women, which reflects how society still elevates 'sacrifice' as an ideal feminine trait. She questioned, “When a successful, independent woman breaks down in tears over someone else's husband, what message does that send about her own self-worth and identity?”

Her remarks have quickly gone viral, igniting widespread debate across social media. While many have agreed with her feminist critique, others have defended Karisma’s emotional response, calling it a personal and human reaction that deserves empathy, not judgment.

The controversy has extended beyond Karisma and Taslima, sparking broader conversations around feminism, emotional expression, and the way society views women’s roles in relationships. As the debate continues, it raises deeper questions: Is a woman’s public display of love and sorrow a sign of strength, weakness—or simply humanity?
