Trump Targets Indian-Origin NYC Mayoral Candidate Zohran Mamdani With Harsh Personal Attack
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy by launching a scathing attack on Zohran Mamdani, the Indian-origin candidate who recently won the Democratic primary in the race for New York City mayor. In a series of posts and interviews, Trump labeled the 33-year-old progressive politician a "100% Communist Lunatic" — and didn’t stop there.
He further mocked Mamdani’s appearance, voice, and intelligence, saying, “He looks terrible, his voice is grating, and he’s not very smart.” The remarks have drawn criticism from various quarters, with many describing them as racist and Islamophobic.
Mamdani, who is currently a State Assemblyman representing Astoria, Queens, is the son of acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair. His upset victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary was seen as a major win for the party’s progressive wing.
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani focused on issues such as:
Rent stabilization and housing reforms
Free public bus service
Universal childcare access
And a strong, unapologetic support for Palestinian rights.
He also emphasized his identity as a Muslim immigrant, which resonated with large sections of New York’s diverse voter base.
Trump’s remarks have sparked intense debate in political circles. While critics have condemned his comments as bigoted and inflammatory, his supporters argue that he was merely criticizing Mamdani’s socialist policies and pro-Palestinian stance.
As New York heads into a high-stakes mayoral election, it remains to be seen how Trump’s interference — and Mamdani’s growing grassroots support — will shape the final outcome.
