Brahmanbaria, June 2, 2025 – In a heartbreaking incident, a teenage mother has been accused of killing her three-month-old baby, who was sleeping on the veranda of a guesthouse in Brahmanbaria, by throwing it into the Titas River. Police said that the teenage mother, who was a victim of child marriage at the age of just 14, confessed to the gruesome murder during initial police interrogation. It is believed that she did this act due to her disappointment with her life and mental distress.
The incident took place last Sunday (June 1) night in the Noagaon Paschimpara area of Noagaon Union of the upazila. The deceased child has been identified as Lamia Begum, she is only three months old. The child’s mother is Majia Begum (14) and father is Tajul Islam (20).
Sarail Police Station and local sources said that the other members of the family were sleeping inside the house last night. Baby Lamia was sleeping next to her mother on the veranda. Once, Majia Begum took the child to the Titas River flowing past the house in the dark of night and threw the child into the river. Then she returned home.
In the morning, the family members started searching for the child Lamia on the balcony. After much searching, when the child was not found anywhere, the family became suspicious and informed the police. The police reached the spot and questioned Majia Begum. During the initial interrogation, she confessed to throwing the child into the river.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station Mohammad Emranul Islam said that after questioning Majia Begum, a search was conducted in the Titas River based on the information given by her. After a long search with the help of locals, the body of the child Lamia was recovered on Monday (June 2) morning.
OC Emranul Islam also said that Majia Begum seems to be mentally and socially disturbed. She was married at the age of just 14 and became a mother at this young age. It is believed that she took such a terrible decision after being unable to cope with the mental stress and family pressure caused by child marriage.
Police said that the child's body has been sent to the Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. Majia Begum has been arrested and legal action will be taken against her. The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the area and locals have started a new discussion about the terrible consequences of child marriage.
