Dhaka, June 2, 2025 – A senior technical employee of the Faculty of Science of Dhaka University has been accused of embezzling about 3 million taka of VAT and tax from the research project fund. After the incident came to light, the university authorities have temporarily suspended the accused employee Md. Delwar Hossain and formed an investigation committee in this regard. This has raised new questions about the financial discipline and supervision system of the university.

According to university sources, on May 20, a senior official of the university's Finance and Accounts Department sent a letter to the Registrar's Office. The letter said that 3 million 8 thousand 864 taka of VAT and tax of the 'A' type research project of the Faculty of Science had not been deposited in the government treasury. However, the money was withdrawn by the project demanding payment of this money. This means that this money has been embezzled in some way.

The university authorities took quick action based on this allegation. On May 30, the accused Md. Delwar Hossain was temporarily suspended by an order of the university's registrar. The order states, "Md. Delwar Hossain has been temporarily suspended due to serious misconduct in accordance with Sub-rule 4(c) of the Dhaka University Employee Conduct and Disciplinary Statute-2021." The same order also states that he will be given half of his basic salary as a food allowance during the suspension period.

A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident with the university's Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Sitesh Chandra Basak as the convener. The other members of this committee are the director of the university's finance and accounts department and the joint director (finance and audit). The committee has been asked to investigate the incident in detail and submit a report as soon as possible.

Initial investigation revealed that Delwar Hossain is not just a technical employee, but he has been responsible for the financial transactions and bill payments of the project for a long time. It has been alleged that he embezzled this money by using his influence or through some other process.

Several university teachers have expressed their disappointment over the incident. They say that embezzlement of research project funds is a serious crime. It damages the quality of research and the image of the university. They demand that the real culprits be identified through an investigation and given exemplary punishment so that such incidents do not happen again in the future.

The incident has also exposed the weaknesses in the university's internal financial management. Questions are being raised about how such a huge amount of money was embezzled without depositing it in the government treasury, and why this matter has not come to the attention of the authorities so far. The investigation committee is expected to look into these issues as well.
