Dhaka, June 2, 2025 – Due to heavy rainfall and upstream hill slopes, there is a possibility of worsening flood situation in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the country. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) has said that the flood situation may deteriorate especially in these three districts of Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Chittagong. The water of 8 major rivers of the country may flow close to or above the danger level in the next 24 to 48 hours.
According to the latest bulletin of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center, the water of Surma, Kushiyara, Manu and Khowai rivers in Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions may increase for the next 48 hours and may cross the danger level. In addition, the water of Sarigowain, Jadukata, Dhalai and Someshwari rivers may also come close to the danger level.
Some districts may face deterioration:
Sylhet: The water of Surma and Kushiyara rivers is already flowing above the danger level at some points. In the last 24 hours, Sylhet has recorded 234 millimeters of rainfall. This has flooded many low-lying areas of Sylhet city and bordering Gowainghat, Companiganj and Kanaighat. The flood situation is likely to worsen further in the next 24 hours.
Moulvibazar: The water level of the Manu and Khowai rivers is rising, which may cause flood conditions in the low-lying areas of Moulvibazar. Due to continuous rainfall and hilly slopes for the last three days, the water level of rivers, canals, beels and haors is rising rapidly.
Chittagong: The water level of the Muhuri, Feni and Halda rivers in Chittagong division may increase in the next 24 hours and may approach the danger level. As a result, the risk of flooding is increasing in low-lying areas like Mirsarai and Fatikchhari in Chittagong district. People are especially in panic due to cracks in the embankments of the Muhuri and Feni rivers in Feni district.
Other River Status and Forecast:
Tista, Dharla and Dudhkumar: The water level of these three rivers of Rangpur division may increase in the next 48 hours. The water level of Teesta river may reach close to the warning level.
Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganga-Padma: The water level of Brahmaputra-Jamuna river is currently stable or decreasing, but it is expected to increase in the next four days, which is expected to remain below the danger level. While the water level of Ganga river is stable, the water level of Padma river is increasing. Although the water level of these rivers is likely to increase in the next 5 days, it is more likely to remain below the danger level.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center also said that due to the continuous heavy rainfall in the upstream areas of Meghalaya and Assam in India, the water pressure in the rivers of northeastern Bangladesh is increasing. As a result, there is a high risk of flooding in the border areas of Sylhet.
The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and instructions have been given to the local administration to take necessary measures. Besides preparing shelters for the water-logged people, preparations are also being made to distribute relief.
