Not just Eid holidays, workers also need salaries and bonuses: Demand to ready-made garment owners

Dhaka, June 3, 2025 – With the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha in sight, there has been a demand for the prompt payment of not only the Eid holiday but also the arrears of workers and Eid bonuses. Various organizations and labor leaders working on labor rights have urged the owners of the ready-made garment sector. They say that timely payment of salaries and bonuses is very important to ensure the Eid celebration of the workers.

This demand was made by various labor organizations today, Tuesday (June 3). Labor leaders say that every year, there is a kind of uncertainty about the payment of salaries and bonuses to workers before Eid. Sometimes, the salaries and bonuses of the workers are paid at the last minute, which creates problems for their Eid shopping and going to the village.

Abu Zafar, President of the Labor Rights Forum, said, "The country's economy is active due to the hard work of the workers. The ready-made garment industry is moving forward in exchange for their sweat. It is the moral and legal responsibility of the owners to pay fair salaries and bonuses to the workers during Eid." He said, not only should Eid leave be given, but their arrears of salary and festival allowance must be paid before the holiday, so that they can celebrate Eid comfortably.

Garment Workers' Unity Forum General Secretary Kamrul Islam said, "There are some unscrupulous employers who delay salary and bonus till the last minute. Sometimes they even create dissatisfaction among the workers by not paying bonus or paying less." He urged employers' organizations like BGMEA and BKMEA to take effective steps to ensure that salary and bonus are paid before Eid in every factory.

The workers' leaders also said that workers in different parts of the country have to return home during Eid. If they do not have salary and bonus in hand, this is not possible for them. Many times, workers get caught in a debt trap, which creates great mental stress for them.

BGMEA and BKMEA, organizations of ready-made garment industry owners, have always urged employers to pay salary and bonus to workers before Eid. However, it is difficult to ensure this 100% in all factories.

Usually, workers' salaries and bonuses are paid a few days before the Eid holidays begin. However, this time too, labor organizations are demanding that this process start earlier so that workers get enough time to prepare for Eid. It is expected that the government may also issue instructions to industrial owners in this regard.
