Savar, June 3, 2025 – A student of Jahangirnagar University has been accused of being harassed on a private bus plying on the Mirpur-Nabinagar route in Dhaka. The incident took place on Monday night (June 2), which has created intense anger among the students after it came to light. The university's proctorial body immediately filed a written complaint against the bus driver and the police have started investigating the incident.
The victim is a student of the 46th batch of the university's Department of Archaeology. She said that she was going from Mirpur to Savar last night. The number of passengers on the bus was low. On the way, the driver made obscene comments towards her and repeatedly asked her to sit in the back seat. This made the student feel uncomfortable and panicked.
The student alleged that the driver was purposefully misbehaving with her and trying to harass her in various ways. Later, she reported the matter to her classmates and the university's proctorial body.
Proctoral body's action and investigation:
A team led by Jahangirnagar University Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan immediately took action after learning about the incident. They informed the Savar Highway Police Station and filed a written complaint against the bus driver.
On Tuesday (June 3) morning, Savar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Ainul Haque said that they had received a written complaint from the Jahangirnagar University authorities. He said, "We have started an investigation based on the complaint. Efforts are being made to identify the bus driver and he will be brought to justice as soon as possible."
University Proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan said, "The incident of harassing one of our students on the bus is very sad and condemnable. We have complained to the law enforcement agencies to take action against it as soon as possible. We want the strictest punishment to be ensured against the guilty driver, so that no one dares to do such a thing in the future."
Jahangirnagar University students are expressing strong anger on social media over the incident. They have demanded to ensure a safe environment for women in public transport. Various student organizations of the university have also protested the incident and demanded exemplary punishment for the guilty driver.
In recent times, incidents of harassment and sexual assault of female passengers in public transport have been increasing at an alarming rate. This incident has once again raised questions about the safety of women in public transport and highlighted the need to take strict steps to stop it.
