A tragic train accident occurred on the night before Eid at Kalurghat Bridge in Chittagong. Mohammad Touhidul Islam Tushar (27) was killed when a tourist express train collided with a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw at around 10:30 pm last Thursday (June 5). He was a resident of Banglapara in East Gomdandi, Boalkhali and was an auto-rickshaw driver by profession.
Upon receiving the news of the accident, Tushar's father Abul Mansur rushed to Kalurghat Bridge with his two daughters. Finding no trace of his son there, he went to the local upazila health center, but Tushar was not found there either. Later, he learned that Tushar had been taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. He went there and identified his son's body and brought it home in the early hours of the morning.
The next morning, Mansur buried his son near the house. Tushar's mother Rizia Begum hugged her son's clothes and shoes to her chest and burst into tears. Tushar was the only brother among three siblings. "We have to live with our brother's memory," said elder sister Ruma Akhter.
After the accident, the Railway Ministry formed a four-member investigation committee and suspended four railway workers. Initial investigation revealed that some vehicles had disobeyed the train signal and climbed onto the bridge, which led to the accident.
